Pani 2017

‘Pani’ (the word for water in many South Asian languages) was a commission for the Horniman Museum, London. It responds to research into the impact of water pollution upon bio-diversity and human health in the region. The installation comprised of a large scale embroidered print and a series of terracotta pots. The print merges satellite imagery of the Sunderbans region of Bangladesh, with drawings of flora and fauna at risk as a result of water pollution. The colours and embroidery stitches sewn into the print, reflect local textiles traditions to make connection between the social and environmental. The pots, which are based upon traditional water carrying vessels, are cracked and deformed to suggest damage. They are decorated with drawings of biological and chemical pathogens found in the rivers.
