Molecular Clouds was a commission for an ambitious large-scale light art projection for LUTN (Light Up The North). It toured to four light festivals across the North West – Light Night Leeds, Light Up Lancaster, Barnsley Bright Nights & Lightwaves Salford Quays. This video shows the first part of the projection, which was followed by interactivity (please see process video in the ‘Projects’ tab) where audiences can reach up and ‘touch’ greenhouse gas molecules to make them disappear.
Molecular Clouds explores themes of climate change using intricate and mesmerising imagery. It reveals greenhouse gases which are invisible to the naked eye and invites audiences to engage playfully with their molecules as they float up into the atmosphere.
The work evokes the natural world through beautiful images of trees and the sun accompanied by the sounds of nightingales, running water, cello and piano. It aims to give audiences a sense of agency as they interact collectively with the science of climate change, which is represented as colourful data-map visualisations..
